How Snowboarding Snurfed Its Way!

From mountains of Russia covered deep in powder snow
comes another refreshing 'White Winter' Bing homepage!
Where skilled snowboarders bending sideways really low
speed right into your mouth-wide open face!

I found more info on clicking the link below
that it all began with 'Snurfing' in good old days!
Attached to snurfer in front was a rope
to help steer it right and not go astray!

Children of Sherman Poppen got really bored
so he created it for them in 1965 on Christmas Day!
His wife Nancy named this invention of the board
noting it allowed riders to surf on snowy highways!

The word spread quickly and people got all gung-ho
about the thrill of surfing in this new way!
And then there were championships for racing down the slope
until another invention came along and made hay!

Bindings were added for a better hold
by none other than Burton Jake!
He won a snurfing competition with his new board
which is how the foundation for 'Snowboarding' was laid!

Jake founded a company called 'Burton'
which serves a variety of snowboards from its tray!
While Poppen was recognised as the 'Grandfather' of the sport
and was inducted into Banff's Snowboarding Hall of Fame!

Its so popular now among the mountain folks
that snowboarders slash as much snow as skiirs spray!
And for deciding who owns the slippery slopes,
both parties have now entered a never-ending fray!

Story
The inspiration behind this poem was this homepage of Bing which was actually a video of snowboarders surfing towards a camera.

Twenty, Thirty or Forty

To you when you were turning thirty,
I asked what we must do
on this birthday specially
so its memorable through and through!

After thinking for a minute
softly you replied,
"Let's not celebrate and tell it...
...to people what age was I"!

Surprised by your response
As it was unexpected,
I asked what would be the cons
for telling how many years you have collected!

You said, "Some people of my age...
...have accomplished much more.
And my achievements when I gauge...
are not as many as they bore"!

Saddened and shocked
To hear these words from you!
I wondered if these thoughts
were shared by others too!

And then it occurred to me
That don't we all feel so blue
whether we are twenty, thirty or forty
that we could have achieved a thing more or two!

Human memories are not rad
and are weirdly wired!
We tend to remember the ones which are bad
while the good ones are all mired!

They are like boxes long forgotten
which never get opened daily
and when they do open,
things contained launch a memory rush so mighty!

So you my dear husband
need a little reminding
about your achievements abundant
and how high they are still piling!

Bright eyes and smiling face!
Your jokes may not be the greatest of the greats
but a look at the happy you rejuvenates
those present around and their dullness decimates!

A hard worker and a true self made man
born without a silver spoon,
and so you shine bright no less than
a beautiful white full moon!

A humble character of simplicity
for whom no one is more or less!
It is no light a quality
to treat everyone with so much respect!

In profession dear husband your metal you prove!
Its not millions or billions that matter!
Its the problems you solve and remove
which let the praise of your brilliance scatter!

Parents proud, in-laws too,
your sisters love you dearly!
Niece and nephews look up to you,
You never stop amazing your family!

You always lend a helping hand
in want, need or necessity,
expecting in return just another command,
so adorable is your generosity!

Versatile you are like a Swiss army knife!
Snowboarding, squash, sketching,
or be it table tennis, even flying a kite,
photography, cooking or hiking!

You see, your achievements are real,
as real as the northern lights!
Happy about them you should always feel
and never stop celebrating your life!

And its not just you,
its true with all other human beings,
Everyone achieves something invaluable and new,
which none other has ever achieved!

So lets pop up some confetti,
and light up the candles bright!
Lets celebrate your birthday honey,
with all the happiness as we might!

Happy Thirtieth Birthday!

Homepage of Bing

It's been a few months now how my day begins...
With ginger tea and a look at beautiful homepage of Bing!

And so good these days because it is...
An immediate way to soak the White Winter in!

Story

Homepage of Bing was originally written on December 30, 2015 and published on Facebook. Bing is a well known search engine which displays a new photograph daily on its homepage. During the Christmas holidays of 2015, it was particularly showing photos of white winter, crackling fireplace, beautifully lit towns and Christmas trees, which captured the holiday mood perfectly! It had no less than a story-book feel. I was smitten! Hence, these two couplets!

Turning Thirty

A decade ends,
A decade begins!

To celebrate it well,
To wish him wins,

We'll ring your doorbell,
As Rishi's kins!

Story
Turning Thirty was written on January 2, 2016. My friend Rishi had turned thirty for whom I wrote this poem.

A Lamb and A Dragon

We shall be there,
At your haunted lair,

Where in darkness of the cold Halloween night,
Just before clocks shift back from one to mid-night,

Anything and everything would be possible,
And it would be a never seen before spectacle,

Where on receiving candies heaping in piles,
A Lamb and a Dragon will cast spells of smiles,

Which would be returned as cute cuddles,
By peculiar and impossible couples,

Like Teja and Hermione,
A Hit Man and a Minnie,

A She-Elf and Daler Mehndi,
A Vampire and Black Fairy,

A Vampire lady and her Vampire Man,
Are the only ones with a couple dress plan,

Red Robin and Darth Vader,
There would be a few more pizza-takers,

With our paths lit by Jack-o-Lanterns' light,
Tonight in Bothell, we shall unite!

Story
A Lamb and a Dragon describes a Halloween costume party. It was written on Oct 31, 2015, in response to my friend's invitation at her place in Bothell, WA. It was her daughter's first Halloween and she dressed her up as a cute pink lamb! Another toddler was dressed up as a colorful little dragon! This poem also describes what grown-ups had planned to wear and what was for dinner.
